Continents

Continents are Earth’s primary land divisions. A continent is a continuous expanse of land, it is a massive area of land that is separated from others by water or other natural features. Many nations use a system that divides the world into seven continents, which are (from largest to smallest in terms of land area):

Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia/Oceania.

Countries

A Country is land that a single government controls. Countries are also called nations, states, or nation-states. Countries can be large or small. The United Nations recognizes 195 countries in the world. 193 of these countries are members of the United Nations (UN) and two countries are not: Vatican City/Holy See and the State of Palestine, both of which are classified as non-member observer states.

The global population is an estimate of the number of people on the planet and currently sits at about 8.1 billion people.

7 Continents of the World

There are seven continents, 195 countries and five oceans on our planet. The continents are the huge land masses that are separated by the waters of the oceans.

In order from largest to smallest by size, they are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australasia/Oceania.

In order from largest to smallest by population, they are Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia/Oceania, and Antarctica.

The Earth initially had only one large landmass called Pangaea

There weren’t always continents, millions of years ago it started as one large mass of land called Pangea. 200 million years ago, Pangaea began to break apart. The pieces of Pangaea that began to move apart were the beginnings of the continents that we now know today.

Asia is the largest continent in size.

Asia is the world’s most populous and biggest continent both in terms of people and land area. In fact, it accounts for 30% of the world’s land area. This means most people on our Earth live on the Asian continent.

Africa is the continent with the most countries.

There are 54 countries on the African continent. These included countries, such as Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe. laudantium cum accusamus ullam voluptatibus commodi numquam, error, est. Ea, consequatur.

Antarctica is the smallest continent by population numbers. This means the huge continent is only sparsely populated.

Antarctica has only research stations for scientists and no permanent settlements. Antarctica is covered almost completely by ice. 90% of the planet’s ice is located on this continent, making up 60% – 70% of the world’s freshwater supply.

The driest place on Earth

The driest place in the world is the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, which is actually next to the biggest body of water, the Pacific Ocean. It is believed that Atacama’s Calama city saw no rain for 400 years until a sudden storm fell in 1972. Unlike most deserts, the Atacama is relatively cold. totam, facilis laudantium cum accusamus ullam voluptatibus commodi numquam, error, est. Ea, consequatur.

Colombia’s brightest rainbow is in its river

Normally you’d find rainbows in the sky, but the Caño Cristales, also known as the “River of Five Colours”, beams brighter than any rainbow in the sky.

Located in Colombia’s Serranía de la Macarena National Natural Park, this stunning river owes its multi-coloured beauty to the Macarenia Clavigera, a plant that lives in the riverbed. It’s best to visit between May to November when the river weeds blossom in yellow, blue, green and red. They get brighter hues during this time as the waters are shallower, allowing more sunlight to reach the plants.
